Did you know that if someone becomes injured on your property you may be named as a defendant in a personal injury lawsuit? Each holiday season, injury rates rise sharply due to special hazards typically present on properties. You can protect yourself from legal liability this year by taking the following precautions.
Holiday Lights
Holiday lights are festive, but they can also be hazardous. Before hanging up the lights, inspect each string of lights carefully for signs of damage. If you notice any frayed wiring or loose electrical connections, you should discard the lights and replace them. Damaged lights can spark an electrical fire. When hanging the lights, avoid using push pins or nails, as these can inadvertently damage the wiring. You should also protect yourself from a possible fall by hanging lights from a secure ladder placed on solid ground. Wear non-slip footwear and have someone standing by to hold the ladder still for you.
Candles
Many people like to light candles during the holiday season. Always position candles far away from flammable objects, such as curtains and napkin holders. Remember to snuff out the candles before leaving the room—never leave them burning unattended.
Tripping Hazards
Holiday decorations can sometimes be a tripping hazard. Make sure there are no extension cords laying across walking paths. Avoid placing decorations in areas where someone might trip over them. Although the climate of Southern Arizona is far different from that of northern states, the winter weather can sometimes include snow and ice. Keep a non-toxic de-icing agent on hand and spread liberal amounts over all walkways as needed.
Visibility
The lack of visibility in walking areas can also be problematic. Keep some spare lightbulbs handy so you can immediately replace burned out bulbs. Make sure there is adequate lighting in all rooms of the home and around all exterior walkways.
